NEWS: Emma Ruth Rundle Announces Upcoming Album These Killing Times
Five years after the release of her last studio record, Engine of Hell, the highly acclaimed Emma Ruth Rundle has announced her forthcoming record titled These Killing Times. The announcement come alongside single “Powerless“, which sees Emma Ruth Rundle return to a full band setup, the first after her solo endeavour since 2018’s On Dark Horses. The record will be released via her own label under the named Errant Child and will release later this year on September 18th.
Since the release of Engine of Hell back in October 2021, the following years have seen Emma Ruth Rundle expand and explore her artistry. Whether it was the EP release of Orpheus Looking Back, which contained B-sides from Engine of Hell, followed by the vocally-experimental record in Electric Guitar Two: Dowsing Voice. After this, multiple tours across either side of the Atlantic were embarked on by Rundle. Capturing hearts at an intimate London show or taking her place upon the stage at ArcTanGent, the years between Engine of Hell and the upcoming These Killing Times have not been quiet ones for Emma Ruth Rundle.
The first single from the record, “Powerless“, delves into the anger and rage of the billionaire class, and their associates being exposed. Rundle comments: “We are incessantly confronted with an onslaught of news and headlines which are endlessly demoralising and dehumanising“. It’s a track that showcases the themes of the record; the human reaction to the horrors we are confronted with daily, whether it be genocide, crisis after crisis, or varying weights impacting the working class across borders. The lyricism within “Powerless” invokes the ability to both destroy but also to build something better, in the hope of people understanding their agency within the wider structures.
As mentioned, These Killing Times sees a full-band setup, with drums, guitars and all accompanying Emma Ruth Rundle on this much anticipated record. The album features drummer Jess Gowrie (Chelsea Wolfe, Mrs. Piss), long-time friend and collaborator Troy Zeigler, Patrick Shiroishi, Nick Reinhart’s (Tera Melos), Gina Gleason (Baroness), Marissa Nadler, Lukas Frank (Storefront Church) and Amelia Baker (Cinder Well).
