American deathcore band Whitechapel have dropped their third single from upcoming album Kin. This new track, entitled “Orphan”, features a music video directed by David Brodsky:
The video primarily features vocalist Phil Bozeman alone in a dark space, often huddled with his arms hugging his knees. Eventually, the full band breaks into the scene, and a dazzling guitar solo takes center stage. The imagery and artistry support the crushing themes of loneliness and despair.
“Orphan” represents a complete break with their old deathcore sound. Instead, this song is heavily steeped in Phil Bozeman‘s newfound affinity for clean vocals. It further builds on the direction they explored in The Valley to great effect. Guitarist Alex Wade says to expect “elements of the record that have more of a rock and open vibe,” and this track delivers accordingly. “Early in the writing, there was some discussion of the album being like The Valley part II,” Bozeman adds.
The band also speaks to the larger story behind Kin, of which this single is a critical piece. “‘Orphan’ represents the battle of accepting what reality has given me,” Bozeman says, “and the battle between me and my alternate reality’s realm.” He also goes on to describe the new record as a “continuation” of what they were able to achieve on their last outing. The goal of this next album? “To breathe and have life and to sound bigger than anything we’ve made so far,” Bozeman answers.
Whitechapel also announced a tour with death metal heavyweight Cannibal Corpse, which begins in February of 2022. Tickets will go on sale on Friday, October 15th here.
Kin is out on October 29th via Metal Blade Records, and will be covered for all Boolin faithful. In the meantime, keep it here for all things Whitechapel.
