Today, Veil Of Maya have announced the details of their long-awaited seventh album alongside the surprise drop of a third single, “Red Fur“. The new record, entitled [M]other, is set to release May 12th. The album is produced by Zach Jones, who has worked recently with the likes of Chelsea Grin, Fit For a King, and Silent Planet, making this the fifth consecutive Veil Of Maya album with a different producer. The four now-standalone singles released between 2017’s False Idol and this newest album cycle also boast a different producer (“Members Only” – Taylor Larsen; “Outsider” – Michael Taylor; “Viscera” – Mark Okubo; “Outrun” – Josh Strock). Certainly, the band appear keen to continually evolve, and their latest offering prior to the announcement, “Godhead”, saw them experimenting firmly within the realms of tech-death.
Veil Of Maya’s release ‘strategy’ over the last few years has been a source of frustration for many. Individual singles in 2019, 2020, two in 2021, and another, “Synthwave Vegan”, in 2022 has often led to community jokes about waiting for the next song of the year. This has been compounded by the fact that, quite honestly, each has been fantastic, leaving fans pining for more. Yet, it’s important to note that the delay for the next Veil Of Maya album has vexed nobody more so than the band. It has been a long and arduous process that has brought the American progressive metalcore outfit finally to this announcement: a scrapped album, lengthy production stretches, and a spell of quite transparent writer’s block on the part of guitarist Marc Okubo.
Replete with bouncy polyrhythms and gnarly growls from vocalist Lukas Magyar, “Godhead” was absolutely worth the wait. The same will no doubt prove true of [M]other as a whole. Now, with the surprise release of the album’s third single, “Red Fur“, the band have once again switched gears, a timely reminder of the sheer range and infectiousness of Magyar‘s clean vocals without foregoing some of the insane guitarwork which has defined their sound.
That the group now have a collection of songs they are proud of and are excited to share is to be celebrated, and the ten tracks will undoubtedly set the community alight come May. With only “Synthwave Vegan” and the recent “Godhead” of the interim singles featuring on this newest release – much to the relief, I’m sure, of fans wanting as much new material as possible from the djent titans – it will be interesting to see where the narrative concept develops. Hopefully the loose theme of female empowerment explored on Matriarch and the more stringent story of False Idol serve as an indicator of what is to come lyrically, particularly given the striking similarities of the [Mo]ther and Matriarch titles and artworks. “We’re so excited to introduce the next phase of Veil Of Maya. We know our fans have been waiting patiently for a long time for us to release a new album and we appreciate you all so much.”
Back in 2020, Okubo remarked, “I am feeling that remaining a heavy band is the move and kind of going back to our roots is the vibe.” Based upon the recent deathcore-adjacent singles, that is absolutely the direction the quartet have explored. [M]other will almost certainly offer up some of those infectious melodies “Red Fur” shines with, but for now we have a pair of the absolute hardest tunes of the year to enjoy. And, with a release date finally secured, enjoy it we can. These latest songs are sure to rip live, and the rest of the record will be out in time for performances on the band’s extensive North American tour supporting Avatar, which runs April 28th to May 28th.
[M]other will release May 12th via Sumerian Records, and you can pre-order it here. Additionally, you can find the album’s artwork and official track listing below. For all things Veil Of Maya, djent, and music in general, including our forthcoming interview and review of the record, keep it locked on Boolin Tunes.
