Santa Cruz unit Scowl have announced their upcoming EP, Psychic Dance Routine, which is set for release this coming April. This will be their third EP, following on from their 2019 releases of their debut Demo and Reality After Reality. With the announcement comes brand new single “Opening Night“, which shows off a shift in direction for the group.
Psychic Dance Routine was recorded and mixed by Will Yip, who has worked on recent Turnover, L.S. Dunes and Soul Blind records. It will be their second release on well known label, Flatspot Records, who they debuted on with their full length How Flowers Grow. The latest single shows a departure from their staple sound, blending alternative influences into their hardcore riffs and melodies. Explaining this direction, vocalist Kat Moss states:
“Opening Night’ is a song I’m particularly excited about because I really worked on this song’s structure with the boys in the band. I felt inspired by early 2000’s indie rock songs written by bands like The Strokes and Vampire Weekend.”
She continues with “Lyrically this song takes a pretty literal stab at my experience of feeling jolted from stage to van, and back again, every single night. I also had experiences on tour where I was seeing faces in the crowd that belonged to people from my past, and it was pretty shocking.”
Rocketing to the forefront of the hardcore scene since their release of How Flowers Grow, their upcoming EP will undoubtedly give them further momentum. Set to play at 2023’s Outbreak in Manchester, returning after their opening slot on the third day in 2022. They were most recently in the UK supporting Stick To Your Guns alongside LANDMVRKS and Soul Blind, which saw them perform of a string dates including Boom in Leeds, Thekla in Bristol and the 02 Islington in London.
Three vinyl variants will be available from the official store; opaque neon green, dark blue/opaque red and a clear purple cornetto vinyl, all of which can be pre-ordered the link below. There is also a limited BrooklynVegan vinyl, ultra clear/dark purple cloudy, with pre-orders here.
