Love is like hunger when you’re dying of thirst
Today we premiere a new single from Oxbow, “Lovely Murk”, featuring Lingua Ignota. The track is the last before Oxbow’s new record Love’s Holiday drops in full on the 21st July.
The track sees Oxbow’s guitar and bass sticking a solid groove whilst Eugene Robertson’s rich voice provides engrossing narration through the track’s slow verses. Simplicity is certainly the order of the day for Oxbow this season, the band’s only embellishment being some extra mellotron-style strings to give the ending a dark twist. It’s delightful to see that the feature, Lingua Ignota (Kristin Hayter), slots into “Lovely Murk” so well. She brings a chamber-classical flavour to the quiet bridge, and swells her voice as a choir during the verses. If you enjoyed tracks such as “Pennsylvania Furnace”, “Lovely Murk” might be its upbeat country-blues cousin. The video is a bit of fun too: a swashbuckling tale (literally crediting fencing choreographer Daniel Feighery) in sepia countryside that takes a turn for the supernatural.
It’s a key time for both of these projects. Oxbow are about to drop their new record Love’s Holiday through Ipecac Recordings, their first in five years. Hayter has two more shows as Lingua Ignota before the project is put to rest. Thus, this track is a key opportunity to observe a time of change, as we anticipate her future artistic direction. Her final shows are a short residency in London and will be supported by Ashenspire and KEN Mode (the ‘heavy’ night) and Jo Quail and Hide (the ‘quiet’ night, though Jo Quail will absolutely shake you).
