An explosion of announcements have just sprung forth from the Invent Animate camp. Smashing back into the scene following Greyview — one of 2020s strongest metalcore albums — Invent Animate return with the unveiling of their new three-track EP, entitled The Sun Sleeps, As If It Never Was.
Invent Animate have also announced that they are now signed to the almighty UNFD. Some may have foreseen this, as Invent Animate have now released three LPs via Tragic Hero Records, and most record deals are for three albums. Additionally, UNFD have recently signed up many of Invent’s contemporaries, including Sleep Waker and Hollow Front, so this signing ultimately does make a lot of sense contextually.
The Sun Sleeps, As If It Never Was details the harrowing experiences of drummer Trey Celaya and his family’s in navigating drug addiction. The first track on the EP is written from the perspective of one deeply affected and influenced by drugs, whereas the accompanying song explores the perspective of those left suffering in the wake of another’s addictions.
Invent have treated fans to a brand new single — the harrowingly powerful ‘The Sun Sleeps’. On the topic of ‘The Sun Sleeps’, songwriter and drummer Trey Celaya comments: “We wanted to explore both sides of a deeply painful situation, and to draw out how nuanced and weird and difficult these things can be. I think people are learning in the modern day [that] it’s not simple… There’s always a string of trauma and things that are not dealt with and stigmatised mental health that sets off a spiral. Even if one person is clearly in the wrong, it doesn’t exempt them from being a victim in another sense.”
The band’s consideration of the nuance and depth behind such an issue is admirably wise, and must’ve been unimaginably painful to relive for the purposes of the EP. This dark context translates into a song that is comprised of countless layers and complexities.
Speaking on the EP’s context, Celaya says: “Despite all attempts to keep our darker reality shadowed in secrecy, there comes a moment in time when the truth can no longer be hidden… And at once, everything is revealed… In this infinite moment, the bond shared between two loved ones is severed. The flow of time does not wash away the scars, it only immortalises what is suspended in the balance — the pain of loss, the gift of hindsight, and the curse of hope… This EP is a true story of addiction and the trauma that lies in its aftermath of a secret too dark to be hidden.”
