Fans of instrumental post-rock were treated to an incredible night of music this past weekend in NYC. Australian act We Lost The Sea stopped by The Meadows to deliver an intense and cinematic show. The group is on the road supporting their latest release, A Single Flower, which dropped earlier this month. The album continues to push their legacy forward as one of the premier bands in the genre today (check out the album review here). Supporting We Lost The Sea at the show were two equally mesmerizing instrumental bands, tour mates Hubris. and local support Cavallo.

Cavallo

Taking the stage first was NYC’s very own Cavallo. The trio started with an intro of quiet tremolo guitar before diving into their heavy, bashing sound. The dark stage was only backlit with a few lights scattered around the band’s amps, creating a moody atmosphere. The group’s guitarist never stopped jumping around the stage, while their bassist and drummer kept hold of tight, intricate grooves. “That was awesome! We’re from right here in NYC. Thanks to all our friends for coming out early, and all the new friends we’ll make tonight” said their guitarist towards the end of their set.

Hubris.

Up next were Switzerland based post-rockers Hubris., who continued to build on the evening’s already high energy. Ambient sound began filling the room as the band members picked up their instruments on a dimly lit stage. The lights lifted as the band kicked into gear with layered instrumentation and occasional math rock inspired riffs. The band’s guitarist and bass player often met in the middle of the stage to headbang together and swap riffs. The set moved right from one song to the next, with their bassist peppering in occasional synth on select tracks. “We came all the way from Switzerland, and it’s amazing to be here in NYC. Huge thank you to We Lost The Sea for having us, and for you all for showing up” said the band before tearing into their final two songs.

We Lost the Sea

Closing out the night were headliners We Lost The Sea. The lights went black on the empty stage as speakers began playing the intro to “Challenger Part 1 – Flight”. The song’s recorded intro speech about dreams and space exploration rang as the cue for the musicians to take the stage and grab their instruments. The band’s three guitar players immediately began trading smooth, reverberating chords as the song built into a crashing sonic wave. The band used a multitude of effects to produce their trademark sound, including one member even using a screwdriver as a guitar slide to create a gorgeous dissonance of tones at the song’s climax. Without missing a beat, the set moved right into “A Dance With Death”, a cut from the previously mentioned album.

The approximately 90 minute set pulled from across the group’s catalog, with the band members focused on executing their parts with precision. The crowd often bobbed along to the rhythm as the musicians swayed back and forth, thrashing their instruments around. Matching the mood of the songs were the dark stage lights, saturating the band in hues of green with strobe flashes of red and white to accent the dynamic swells of the set.

We Lost The Sea and Hubris. have another week on their U.S. tour together, including appearances at Post. Festival in Indianapolis by both bands. Both groups hit the road separately in October, with We Lost The Sea playing a string of shows in Australia, and Hubris. touring in Europe. Full details can be found on each band’s respective website (We Lost The Sea ; Hubris.)
