Portland based singer-songwriter & guitarist, Emma Ruth Rundle has announced her fifth solo full length album, Engine of Hell. This announcement comes along with a smashing single “Return” which you can check out below.
The announcement comes a year away from Rundle’s 2020 split album May Our Chambers Be Full, which saw her work with sludge metal artist Thou. 2021 saw the split album receive a follow up EP titled The Helm of Sorrow, with Rundle also working with Chelsea Wolfe on the single “Anhedonia“. Outside of collaborations, the upcoming album will be her first solo release since 2018’s. On Dark Horses. With dark and melancholic tunes and themes layered intricately throughout her previous releases, especially Some Heavy Ocean, Engine of Hell is set to be a dark and more piano focused album.
Recorded in late 2020, the first glimpse of the new release on the horizon was shared by Emma Ruth Rundle on her Instagram in August. Speaking about the album, she says, “Here are some very personal songs; here are my memories; here is me teetering on the very edge of sanity dipping my toe into the outer reaches of space and I’m taking you with me and its very f****d up and imperfect. For me this album is the end of an era to the end of a decade of making records. Things DO have to change and have changed for me since I finished recording it.”
Additionally, she says, “This is not a covid album but rather a collection of songs/poems regarding estrangement and entropy. I shed many tears in the process of writing and recording this album – And since then, waiting to release it. It’s been harrowing behind the scenes.I know that there will be some of you who will embrace this fragile and different work and some who will not. I feel incredibly alone and I know that a lot of people out there are going through it as well. I don’t know how to connect so I make art.”
Engine of Hell releases on November 5 via Sargent House and you can preorder the record here as well as find the album artwork and tracklist below. For further news on Emma Ruth Rundle and music, keep an eye on Boolin Tunes.
