EP REVIEW: Worst Doubt – Immortal Pain

Soon this city will be drowned in its own downfall.

As you’d expect from any bustling major city in the Western hemisphere, there’s hardcore scene to found rife with bands of ranging influences. The likes of Headbussa who set to tour with Knocked Loose across the UK and Europe, then other acts such as CALCINE and Corruption Pact make for a scene full of quality. Alongside them are Worst Doubt who have earnt themselves a signing to DAZE and BDHW, depending on which side of the Atlantic you’re on, and a deal that sees them drop EP Immortal Pain under their banner.

Opener “RUINATION” delivers the crunching metallic hardcore riffs that have garnered Worst Doubt some much deserved attention. It has that raw energy that will probably see it served best in a live setting, in the sweat and smoke of a tight venue. “CONSUME” and “MACHINE WAY” continue on a similar fashion; it’s hardcore that without any extra flourish, just barked vocals from Zerrad and riffs for days. Those who desire a little variation in their hardcore EPs may find Immortal Pain serving up a little short here though.

As it charges into “IMMORTAL PAIN” the muddy production begins to sink in, the guitar mids being super scooped with vocals sitting up at the of the mix. There is a lack of clarity at moments, especially towards the high end, which does result in elements getting lost in the mix. This stylistic choice does somewhat work to give Immortal Pain some character, yet it has been pulled off to much better effect elsewhere.

Energetic closer “CITY OF BLIGHT” ends the EP on its more forceful note. The barked vocals come with a snarl to them and an extra oomf to each instrumental, combining together to make for the strongest track. Overall, Immortal Pain is a solid effort that should convince every listener that there’s value in the Paris unit. It will also give those looking for something with a bit of bite and riffs to throw down to a grand time, while Worst Doubt work away on what is coming next.
